Cracker Candy

One of our church members gave us a simple gift 5 years ago when my husband and I renewed our vows.

It was her cracker candy, which is simple, yet addictive.

Line a sheet pan with foil, and then saltines {I hate saltines, but adore the candy btw}.

You will need to break a few to fit at the end. {Make sure the crackers reach the edges.}

In a saucepan, melt 1 cup {2 sticks} of butter, add 1/2 c brown sugar, and boil for 1 minute. Add 1/2 tsp. baking soda and stir until foamy.

Pour carefully over the crackers, and bake for 5 minutes at 375.

Remove from oven. Sprinkle one bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips over all.

Give the chips a few seconds to melt and then spread them carefully with a spatula. If you desire nuts {sliced almonds are fabulous with this} you need to add them now.

Depending on how hungry you are, you can stick this in the refrigerator to set, or the deep freeze for quicker snacking.

Pull the foil out of the pan for easier cutting and enjoy!

Be careful-these are salty, sweet, crunchy and highly addictive.

    This is one of our FAVORITE things to make for handing out at Christmas time. I must limit it in our house to once a year, because I could eat ALL of it by myself!!

    We made these for my hubby’s birthday today! Yum! The only thing that you should specify is to use unsalted butter. I used two sticks of salted butter and it was a little too salty. Thanks for sharing! I’m sure I’ll make these for gifts at Christmas. Mine didn’t break into nice squares.

    • Sam Kelley says:

      Unsalted butter? Nah! I love the salty sweet. The recipe calls for salted, so that is what I have always used. I guess if you used either the butter or crackers unsalted, if you don’t like much salt it would work better for you.

      I try to follow the natural cracker outlines in the grid.

    Maybe it was just my cheapo butter. Yes I buy the Walmart brand! I can’t tell a difference. Maybe it’s saltier than name brand. I like salty sweet too. I also buy the healthier crackers. We avoid corn and dairy so I have to get the ones without corn in them.
