Something New

The “plan my own curriculum” was going well-until I realized I didn’t have hours every weekend to hunt my own curriculum down.

The library searches, the endless planning, and the sore behind. Stuck in the chair.

And then, I was doing an internet search, about Indians, mind you, and I stumbled on this-

Something I was not even looking for, and had never heard of. It’s our new curriculum. The curriculum that even has it’s own game!

Starting it today because mom has still been under the weather- I can’t wait to see how it goes!

  1. Yes! We did A World of Adventure last year in our first year of Homeschooling. I needed a boxed curriculum to interest an 8th grade boy, and it delivered. I added to it, of course, to make it a little meatier for him, but overall it was an EXCELLENT curriculum. In fact, I loaned it to another blogging homeschooling mom for her to use with her son this year. I posted about all of our activities on my blog last year. Feel free to check out some of the things we did. Have fun!

Very interesting! Sounds like you found something fabulous!

Looks fun! I look forward to reading about your learning adventures with this new curriculum!

    hmmmmmm . . . looks suspiciously like a unit study ;)

good for you! I love it when homeschool mommas aren’t intimidated to start all over mid-year.

  5. too funny. A friend just told me about this one. I’m looking for something a bit more boxed next year. I am highly considering My Father’s World (which would love to hear about if you tried) I don’t know…just thinking about it so I’m anxious to hear what you think of this.

    This looks very cool.

  7. well Im not 100% it will work for us. I don’t even know what kids I will have home next year. I think I will be adding 2 to 3 more. Our youngest daughter is REALLY benefiting from the ESL at school. Regardless, I will most likely have a 1st grader and a 5th grader…maybe a 3rd grader too. I was told I could have my 1st grader join in with his older brother but not sure on that.

regarding the one you are using, my friend hasn’t used it. she is going to start homeschooling next year too. she has a friend that told her about it…so she showed it to me. I don’t know anything else other than my friends’s friend like it)

If you are looking for a unit study good for multiple grades, I would go with either this or Paths of Exploration.

    • I used this curriculum with my son when he was in the 8th grade. To me, it was a little too light for him, so I just added activities as I felt he needed them. It would be PERFECT for a 5th grader. And a 3rd grader could easily get in on it, making with just some tweaking. The first grader might be a little young to hang with the Living Books, but maybe not. Just depends on the child. Your first grader could CERTAINLY do all the fun activities, and maybe you could just throw in a couple of age-appropriate books for him/her to round it out.

We really, really like it. When my two 3rd graders are 6th graders, I plan to do it with them, and then move on to the next Learning Adventures curriculum for 7th grade. I liked it that much!!

We enjoyed today. We plan to do the game/review when we get back from Bible study tonight. I think it is fabulous, and am trying to beef mine for our 8th grader and am using the supplement for the younger crowd. I think that there are things in each that everyone can learn from. Not all learning happens only with the labeled age group, it’s one of the things I love most about homeschooling!

It’s listed as one of Cathy Duffy’s 100 Top Picks in her book! I will be interested in seeing what you think! We’ve thought about it…

  11. Gayla says:

I have a question…..what happened to Paths of Exploration? I thought you really liked it. Did your kids not like it or did you just decide to change? I’m a little confused. I definitely agree with changing things up if they are not working, but it seems like it would be confusing to the kids to change things up 3-4 times within one school year.

    • Sam Kelley says:

I try not to mix things up so much-this has been an off year for sure. I do really like POE, but I really wanted to pick up the pace a little more. I guess I got freaked out that my oldest will be in high school this fall.
I do like that this curriculum is more Bible focused.

Can you tell me how long you spend per day doing this? It looks very interesting, I even downloaded the try before you buy! I’ve been looking to change history but didn’t want to start over at creation, I see they also reccommend using Mystery of History as a reading guide or Story of the world. I have MofH but have easy access to SoftheW. Which do you use? Also approximately how much should be budgeted for the extra reading material! I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of this before, but am so grateful that I have now because this might just be what I’ve been needing, Thanks so much for any input you can give me!

I didn’t want to go back to Creation either, this puts us in Egypt with Joseph actually. I’m glad I did. I would use MOH as a guide if I needed a source, but that is just because I don’t like SOTW.

The author tried to find books that could be found in our local libraries, so that we don’t have extra cost involved, and our budgets are also why they keep the costs so low. For us, I went ahead and ordered the first books needed for this year, as we don’t have a great library. I was under 40 bucks, from my memory.

I really can’t believe how thorough/cost effective this is. If you plan ahead, between library and internet, you can come away with no extra cost at all.

As for time, we are doing the same amount of time per day about, 3-4 hours of actual class time (with Math) and then time for review (the game) and individual reading outside of the classroom.

I had been looking at POE. It seemed exciting! But now I’m not sure reading this. How do they compare and do you think one is better than POE? Thanks for your help!

    • Sam Kelley says:

I wouldn’t want you to shy away from POE-I think this unit study is a little more work for mom than POE. Learning Adventures is a 4 year (4th year unfinished) and POE has 3 years for American History alone.

I do love the unit study idea, and both are just that.

Thanks so much. I appreciate your input! I too don’t care for SoftheW a lot of people I know do but for reasons I won’t go into I am not a fan. So I’m glad to know can use Mof H. I will be speaking to dh about getting this into the budget. :-)

We used AWOA a few years ago with our 3 oldest. They still remember quite a bit of it! I only stopped as I couldn’t use it for all of my age levels (or couldn’t figure out how) and I was struggling with feeling like it was enough for Science & Grammar (I’m a BIG grammar fanatic). I WISH I was more of a Unit-study kind of mom. I would have to say that was one of the best years of our homeschool life! Enjoy it.

  16. I know how hard it is to do your own! I had to break down and put my highschooler on “canned” curriculum cause I just didn’t have the time to do it all! I love reading about other larger families that homeschool! And how when one thing doesn’t work then try something new!

I used AWOA for my oldest, then later for my next 2 kids, and I am looking forward to revisiting it again in a year or two with my youngest. It is the best curriculum I have ever used, and in 13 years of homeschooling I have used a lot of stuff.

I saw a link to this Blog post in my G+ stream and I was immediately HOOKED. After more than 10 years of homeschooling, I feel like I’ve finally found our curriculum!! Today was our second day in Ancient Egypt and we had a blast. LOVE IT! Thank you SO much! :)

That’s terrific!! We hope to use it in the future-for now we went back to what we had been using, which is also a fabulous unit study. AWOA is packed full, have fun on your adventure!
