Salt Dough Ornaments

We made three batches of salt dough ornaments yesterday, and they are one of the easiest homemade ornaments we make.

I highly recommend splitting up batches if you need more than one, the dough is so easy to put together, and you won’t need anything but a bowl and your hands to mix it.

The recipe:

2 cups flour

1 cup salt

1 cup warm water

Mix dry ingredients with hands, mix in the warm water 1/2 cup at a time.

{I have seen many recipes for salt dough ornaments that call for less water, but the result is a drier dough, which won’t be as pretty a finished product. This ratio leaves a smooth surface, just waiting to be decorated.}

After cutting, use a straw to make a hole for hanging.

I also lift the cookie away and then smooth any rough edges. OCD…but prettier.

Preheat oven to 200. Bake for about 6 hours, or until dry. {You may also want to leave them in overnight, extra water does mean extra time.} I turn mine when the top side gets white.

Let them cool, paint, let that dry and personalize if you wish.
