Song School Spanish

Did you know that my husband and I met in Spanish 1? We did! Because of that, Spanish is always the choice when I think of teaching my children another language, so when The Crew was able to choose from a few Classical Academic Press titles, I went straight for Song School Spanish.

We received one student book with CD, as well as the teacher book.

What is Song School Spanish?

Song School Spanish is a gentle introduction to everyday Spanish vocabulary, for grades K-3. There are lots of fun songs and illustrations that keep my kids interested, and the use of English in each lesson helps with retention.

There are thirty weekly lessons, and the always have a review at the end of the chapter. The student text has the words to the songs to read along with, handwriting practice

Our experience:

I want to tell you what a joy using this has been! The songs are catchy, I even find myself singing out loud while cooking dinner. The kids are picking up the new words really quickly. Learning new things by song is working really well for them!

We are using Song School Spanish several days each week, breaking up the lessons in small chunks, with almost all of our children. This follows the guide included in the text, but you can always use the book once a week, or another way that works for your homeschool.

One of our favorite moments was sitting on the floor while we introduced ourselves in Spanish. If walls could talk! In the end, even five-year old Leah understood what I was asking her and answered.

Classical Academic Press has found a fabulous way to teach a new language to young students! This is one of the most engaging parts of our day, and everyone loves to get involved.

For extra practice:

When you get to chapter 4, there is a free student website that they can use called FlashDash you can start using for extra review. I think it is pretty fantastic. You may download free MP3 pronunciation files that contain all of the vocabulary outside of song. There are also optional Spanish Amigo Match cards available for an added cost of $26.95.

The bottom line:

Song School Spanish is a fabulous curriculum, and while it was meant for K-3, not using the handwriting portions allows us to stretch it much father. I think this gentle approach makes learning a new language non-intimidating, and will keep Spanish a subject in our homeschool in the future.

I haven’t found myself taking advantage of the extras in the Teacher’s Edition, but I am notoriously bad about that. I am going to start using it this week, it does have some great stuff in there, and you are permitted to make copies for your home.

If I had to include a negative, it would be the orientation of the student text. I wish it was put together in a way that allowed for the student book to sit on my bookshelf like any other workbook.

  2. This sounds great! Thanks for the review. I also have to tell you that my husband and I met in high school Spanish, too! And that very detail was a huge part of our son’s birthmother choosing us to be his parents!

  3. Sounds fun, especially for younger kids. We like to learn and practice Spanish with interaction and games, too. There are a few Spanish songs that every one of my kids know, so that’s been a lot of years singing them (9 children) :)
