Essentials in Writing

Have I mentioned what a blessing reviewing can be? We have struggled so much this year with high school curriculum, and just when my budget ran out, this gem, Essentials in Writing came up for review.

Essentials in Writing

Christian is using 9th Grade- Essay/ Research Paper, which includes (from the website):

  • SENTENCE STRUCTURE – dependent and independent clause; simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences; address sentence errors (fragment, run on, and comma splice)
  • FORMAL PARAGRAPH – structure; expository, persuasive, compare/contrast, and descriptive
  • THE WRITING PROCESS – in depth study of each part of the writing process; practice the writing process with each multi-paragraph composition
  • ESSAYS (formal and informal) – detailed instruction and step by step process for, personal, expository, persuasive, and compare/contrast essays
  • RESEARCH PAPER (project) – detailed instruction and step by step process to conduct a research project and write a research paper (EXPOSITORY)

How it works:

You look at your assignment for the day and then watch the lesson on DVD. If the concept is then understood, your child moves on to the written work, which is provided in PDF format. The assignments are not optional, and the DVD is not meant to stand alone.

Essentials in Writing

Sometimes there are multiple assignments for each DVD lesson. You would finish all of these before moving on to the next DVD lesson.

What we thought:

I think that this course is absolutely fabulous! Christian is pretty picky about video instructors, and there have been plenty that he just doesn’t want to sit through. In my opinion, the instructor, Matthew Stephens is just the right amount of dorky. He is a great teacher, I love to sit in and watch with Christian when I get the chance!

The PDFs have been recently updated, and even though I didn’t actually purchase the product, I emailed and requested the new files. The next day I had a nice email from the vendor with the new files attached. A+ for customer service!

The first few lessons were review for Christian, but as we progressed he started learning some things he hadn’t studied before, and he enjoyed learning with this format.

I can’t tell you how impressed I am with the content, the teaching and the cost. We don’t have a huge budget, but this DVD course is very reasonable. I have paid more for writing curriculum that didn’t have the DVD component! Essentials in Writing will have a spot in our curriculum line-up from now on.

How to purchase:

Essentials in Writing is available for all grade levels. I am really excited about the high school electives, Creative Writing and Technical Writing, which are coming soon!

Price: $40.00, Optional pre-printed worksheets are $20.00

{I also see that they will have a booth set up at the Cincy Convention next month, so I will be picking up the next level when I am there!}
